Food Addictions Causing Obesity, Fresh Vending and Healthy Options Necessary to Curb this Addiction

healthy vending choices

Fresh vending and healthy options are necessary to curb food addiction.

Both the government and the fast food industry promote the concept of personal responsibility in addressing the obesity epidemic. People are frequently encouraged to live a better lifestyle and avoid poor diet choices. Theoretically, this seems practical but food addiction can be an issue for many.

Some research suggests that manufactured food is practically engineered to be addictive.

Fresh vending foods like fruits and vegetables are least likely to encourage binging behavior, while unhealthy foods like potato chips can trigger this behavior. Introducing Fresh Healthy Vending machines into schools, hospitals, offices, health clubs, government office buildings and all other places is a great practice and one that should be undertaken by all locations

Similar biological factors can affect substance abuse issues and dysfunctional eating habits. The cravings for dangerous substances are comparable to food cravings in some. The neurochemical portion of the brain can override the willpower and be overwhelming to individuals that struggle with obesity.  Eliminating the junk food vending machines is a good start and these institutions need to take notice what the enormous impact of the consumption of junk foods can have on people. Vending fresh products such as bananas, apples, yogurts, fresh dairy products and fresh juices can make a positive impact on peoples diets and is a step in the right direction.

Just as people continue to smoke knowing the dangers, self-destructive behaviors brought on by food addiction are difficult to conquer.

The Government Needs to Force Healthy Fresh Options in Our Schools

freshvending option at school

Healthy fresh options in school needs to be forced by government.

In a recent conversation with a close friend, I discussed the eating habits of my child’s classmate. He had completely eaten an entire package of snack cookies and gulped a large sport drink. He had left the sandwich untouched. When I question him about whether or not he was going to eat the remaining sandwich packed for him, he said no. He was full off of the cookies and drink packed in his lunch.

After telling my friend the story, she simply shook her head and suggested that the schools are failing the children in this area. The schools, she argued, should be involved in teaching parents how to make better fresh healthy vending choices. I responded that I thought the responsibility fell squarely on the shoulders of the parents. I believe that the parents should be advocates of their child’s diet.

First Lady Michelle Obama has focused her advocacy efforts on the issue of childhood obesity under her “Let’s Move” program initiative. One figure on her advocacy website says that one-third of children in America are considered to be overweight or obese. This figure has tripled in the past three decades. When Congress takes up the next session, they will be tackling the childhood nutrition measure, which will expand government involvement in fresh vending food programs in the nation’s schools. The primary objective of the bill is to create new mandates for fresh healthy vending and nutrition programs for schools. If the measure is passed, fresh healthy vending options will become a major part of the program and funds will be provided for dinner programs.

While the nation does struggle with major healthy issues, the government’s program will be costly to taxpayers. The program is likely to expand in size and scope quickly. Until the children entered school, I had no idea that breakfast was provided to students. I recently discovered that the programs had been in place for some time. There are even summer programs and after-school fresh vending options in place for many communities. These programs are mostly funded by tax dollars. Even the fresh vending marketing materials are funded by taxpayer dollars. The marketing literature is designed to expand the existing programs already in place.

There is another pending piece of legislation that will offer tax breaks and subsidies to open fresh healthy vending grocery stores in low-income communities. It remains to be seen whether or not these efforts will be successful.

Vending Machines Need to Lead to Vending Fresh Choices for People

fresh vending availability

Fresh vending healthy snacks available everywhere leading to healthy choices for people

Fresh healthy vending machines can help promote healthy snacking and better habits for individuals on the go. This is an ideal solution for those who frequently skip meals. This issue is also important in schools where the number of obese or overweight children continues to grow.

The fresh vending machines should provide healthy alternatives to soda and candy bars, since sugar is fueling the obesity epidemic among children in schools.

Different schools offer different vending options to students. The classification of the schools is a key factor.
A school classified as 5A is more likely to provide free open lunch breaks or use vending machines between classes. These schools provide wide access to junk vending snacks for students.

A 1A type of school like Western Plains High School may have a closed lunch format. These schools restrict the use of vending machines. Vending machines can only be utilized before and after school in 1A facilities.

Fresh vending machines are an option for schools. Fresh healthy vending providers can provide a combination of healthy snacking options for students.

The vending machines can be easily stocked with various types of fruits.

With soda machines, healthier alternatives like flavored water, plain water, or juice can be offered.

Fresh healthy vending machines can also generate revenue for schools.

The fresh vending programs can result in profits for the school if kept stocked at all times. Because students embrace the use of vending machines, they are likely to continue to rely on them for snacks.

Some schools don’t support the fresh healthy vending machines out of concerns for costs. They state that the food isn’t as well-preserved as the junk food in vending machines.

By rejecting the fresh vending machines, they are contributing to the obesity epidemic. The children become reliant on the unhealthy junk food options provided by the machines.

Children between the ages of 6 to 19 are over 30 percent heavier than they were previously. The obesity trend continues to grow at an alarming rate.

By removing sodas from vending machines, and offering fresh healthy vending, the number of temptations can be reduced.

Healthy eating could help push healthy fresh vending programs

The Contra Costa area schools will now have to improve the fresh healthy vending options available to students. The new initiative requires that all locations with vending machines provide more healthy snacks to consumers. The initiative is a part of a larger effort to address the issue of childhood obesity.

Management agreed recently that the beverages and snacks provided to students consist of fresh healthy vending options. The hospitals and area clinics will now have to meet those requirements.

The profits generated through the vending machines will be redirected to obesity prevention programs.
John Gioia, the person responsible for introducing the initiative, believes that the fresh vending program is likely to expand to cover all machines in the county. Currently, there are 36 fresh healthy vending machines on county properties.

Supervisors in the county voted in 2004 to require that 50 percent of all the beverages and snacks meet certain health requirements.

The new requirement was inspired by then pregnant wife of John Goia, who struggled to find fresh vending options while serving on jury duty at a local courthouse. During a break, she attempted to utilize a vending machine to get a snack, and quickly discovered that no fresh healthy vending options were available. The lack of nutritious snacking options was behind the initiative to improve the quality of vending for residents. He says that all of the food in the vending machines was junk food.

Communities in the Monterey and Los Angeles have begun exploring vending mandates for their public health facilities.

The county has moved to extend the bidding period for fresh healthy vendors that can meet these objectives. Supervisory Susan Bonilla is worried about the vendors’ ability to adjust their bidding to meet the new standards.

Research shows that approximately half of the children that utilize the services offered by the health services facilities are overweight or obese.

It is likely that other public health facilities throughout the region will begin to explore similar measures. The initiative requires that a certain percentage of all snacks available through vending machines contain a certain level of nutritional value.

Businesses adding fresh healthy vending

The Muskogee area is celebrating the fresh healthy vending businesses in the community. Compliance officer Rebecca Smith supports initiatives aimed at improving the health of employees. She believes that the businesses are able to benefit from fresh vending options made available to employees.
Certification for fresh healthy vending programs is offered in the business community for their fitness and nutrition programs.
The program offered through Oklahoma is called the Certified Healthy Business Program. The program formally recognizes employers in the area that offer wellness programs the focus on fresh vending choices and fitness. The state-sponsored initiative is the result of a collaborative effort across multiple state departments throughout the state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma Academy, Oklahoma Turning Point Council and the Department of Health are some of the state departments behind the initiative. The Oklahoma Turning Point Council focuses on the development of public health initiatives designed to promote wellness.

Applicants for the 2010 fresh healthy vending business recognitions are encouraged to apply online via the Oklahoma Turning Point Council by the Nov. 15 deadline.

Applicants are not required to be classified formally as a fresh-vending business, said Tamma Randazzo, a field consultant for the public health council.

Fast food restaurants, colleges and elementary schools are all encouraged to apply for the certification. Previous recipients of the certification included a human resources company and school districts in the Agra, Canton and Bristow communities.

There are certain perks for participants of the statewide program. Feedback information will be provided to provide an assessment of the quality of the current program in place. Tools and other information are also provided as a part of the program.

If interested in becoming a part of the program, an application must be filled out. Questions about the wellness program and health policies must be answered as a part of the certification program. Wellness screenings, tobacco prevention initiatives, flu shot services, and basic wellness checkup program information will be requested during the application process. Businesses will also be asked about any of the fitness facilities in the office space. Fresh vending education programs and a posted food pyramid literature is a part of the program.

Companies that offer reimbursement plans for employees that join fitness centers can potentially be considered for the program. The city of Muskogee may offer reimbursement plans for employees that utilize the fitness facility. Parks and Recreation Department Director Mark Wilkerson said that the entity will “reimburse the paid memberships if they go eight times through the month.”
